John began musical training on string bass at age 8. Starting in classical music, he was recruited in middle school to play electric bass in jazz and rock bands. As a bass player there were opporunities to play in many genres - rockabilly, new wave, alternative, folk rock, blues, and musical theater.
John majored in Computer Science at MIT, worked as a Macintosh software engineer on Digital Performer for MOTU, and got a Harvard MBA. The Silicon Valley startup scene led to a stint at Google in its early days. All this time, he played in bands at night and dove deeper into musical theory and orchestration.
After Google John studied with choral composer David Conte and began training on piano, guitar, and vocals. John got started scoring short films, which led to independent features. In 2010 John and his wife Aliona moved to LA, and their son Aleksandr was born that fall. John is currently a student in USC's Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television class of 2012.
